The Flying Geese boys’ basketball team faced a tough challenge on the road, falling to the Bureau Valley Storm 81-31 in a one-sided contest.
Despite a solid first half from Zeb Rashid, the Geese were unable to keep up with the high-powered Storm offense, led by Landen Birdsley’s explosive performance.
Birdsley set the tone early, scoring 10 of Bureau Valley’s 18 points in the first quarter, helping the Storm build a 16-12 lead after the first frame. Rashid kept the Geese in it with 6 points of his own, but the Storm’s defensive pressure and scoring efficiency were evident right from the start.
The second quarter saw the Geese struggling to generate offense outside of Rashid, who finished the first half with 15 points.
Wethersfield’s Gradert and Torres added 2 points each, while Kellan Keane contributed 3. Despite Rashid’s efforts, the Geese found themselves trailing 36-22 at halftime as Bureau Valley’s offense began to click, and the Geese struggled to match their intensity.
However, it was the third quarter where the game truly got away from the Geese. After a solid first half, the Geese were hit with a scoring drought, managing just 4 points in the entire quarter.
Rashid and Drew Hornback each contributed 2 points in the third, but Bureau Valley exploded for 31 points, extending their lead to a staggering 67-26 by the end of the period.
The Geese couldn’t find any rhythm offensively, as Bureau Valley’s defense stifled every attempt, while the Storm capitalized on fast breaks and easy baskets.
The fourth quarter was more of the same, as the Geese were unable to make a dent in the Storm’s lead. Bureau Valley closed out the game with a dominant 81-31 victory, leaving the Geese with plenty to work on moving forward.
