The Kewanee Veterans Council will honor those who died in the service of their country at a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 29 at Kewanee Veterans Park.

The event will begin at 10:15 am. The main speaker this year will be Glenn Morey, president of the Kewanee Veterans Council. The Kewanee High School choir and band will perform, and like years before, area service members who have passed away in the last year, will be remembered and honored.

On Friday, May 26, Jerry Thompson, finance officer for the KVC, said that volunteers will mark the graves of service members. Roughly 3,300 flags will be placed in eight area cemeteries, and several rural cemeteries. Over 800 flags will be placed in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, and roughly 1,500 to 1,800 will be placed at Pleasant View Cemetery. Volunteers will meet that morning at 8 a.m. at the American Legion to begin the meticulous process of locating all of the sites, said Thompson.

Both the Memorial Day service and the flags have been observed in Kewanee for as long as Thompson can remember. The holiday offers a chance to reflect on the countless individuals who served and lost their lives for their country, and to come together with the communities they left behind.
