Central Junior High co-ed golf program tees up this week

By The Kewanee Voice    August 7, 2024

Student athletes at Central Junior High are teeing it up for the first time as the school launches a co-ed golf team for seventh and eighth graders.

The golf season for junior high students is a short one, culminating in an 18-hole sectional round the week after Labor Day. The Steamer golf team will be practicing at Baker Park and participating in four scheduled golf meets before the sectional.

A survey sent out to Central students in the spring revealed a tremendous amount of interest in the new program. Most encouraging for school officials was the interest from students who would otherwise not participate in an extracurricular activity.

The golf program will provide a new and unique opportunity for student-athletes to build confidence and grow in their mental toughness while developing their skills on the course.

The Steamer golfers will be coached by Marcus Throneburg, along with volunteer assistant, Colton Philhower.
