The Kewanee Voice obtains 501(c)3 status

By The Kewanee Voice    August 5, 2024

Last week, the board of directors was notified through a letter from the IRS that The Kewanee Voice has been determined to be a 501(c)3 and has been classified as a public charity.

A former project of the Kewanee Senior Citizens, the Voice was able to accept tax-deductible charitable donations made through that nonprofit organization. But the nonprofit digital publication can now stand on its own.

“We can now accept donations made directly to The Kewanee Voice,” said Board Chair TD Welch, who worked with The Voice’s attorney on the eight-month process. “It will be much easier for our readers and community members to contribute to their local news organization and have those donations deducted from their taxes.”

According to the IRS, donors to the Voice can deduct contributions made under Internal Revenue Code Section 170. Moreover, The Voice is now qualified to receive tax-deductible bequests, devises, transfers and gifts under Sections 2055, 2106 or 2522.

The website information has been changed to reflect the new nonprofit determination. The mission of the nonprofit publication is to provide news and information to enrich the lives of the people of the Kewanee area. Committed to the community, The Kewanee Voice offers a voice for the people, promotes events, recognizes achievements and presents information in a fair and accurate manner.

The website, www.kewaneevoice.com, was launched on May 2, 2023. The publication will open a new downtown office, located at 121 N. Tremont St., this week.
