Kewanee Fire Department clears the way for extra burn days

By The Kewanee Voice    July 24, 2024

Brush and limbs have piled up in residents’ yards due to the EF-1 tornadoes that tore through Kewanee last week. In order to assist Kewanee residents who need to dispose of yard waste, the Kewanee Fire Department announced the creation of extra burn days.

The next two weekends of Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28, as well as Saturday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4, will be officially deemed as burn days for Kewanee residents, assuming that proper weather conditions exist.

A news release issued by the city states that in order for the burn days to occur there needs to be minimal to no rainfall 48 hours before the burn day and the wind speed must be within the allowable limits.

Residents will be allowed to burn tree limbs, branches and brush in lieu of placing it on the curb for pick-up or self-transporting to the city’s collection site at the old hospital property on West Division Street.

“As always, the determination of allowable burning each of these days will be made by the fire department and recorded on the city hall phone line at (309) 852-2611 and posted to the city of Kewanee website (www.cityofkewanee.com) by 8 a.m. each eligible morning,” the news release stated.

In addition, residents choosing to burn are reminded to keep the piles at a maximum of four feet tall and at least 10 feet from any structure. Accelerants are not to be used to light fires and residents are cautioned to always tend to the fire until it is extinguished. Any landscape waste being burned must originate from the resident’s property.

For any safety concerns, residents are asked to contact the fire department non-emergency phone line at (309) 852-2115.
