The parking lot at Central School will get a makeover this summer, as the Kewanee School Board this week hired a contractor to repave the lot.
Hein Construction of Peoria’s bid of $322,000 was the lowest of four the school district received for the work.
Supt. Dr. Chris Sullens told the board that the parking lot east of the school was last resurfaced with asphalt in the early 1990s by the Henry County Highway Department.
The county no longer does such work, Sullens said.
Hein Construction will resurface the lot with concrete. Sullens said the contractor will work around the summer school schedule, and the job should be finished before school reopens in the fall.
The lot is used for recess during the school day, and for parking of people attending Central’s home games.
Also this week, Sullens reported that one day will be added to the Kewanee school year.
He said the state allows schools to have up to five snow days and five days of home e-learning each school year. Kewanee surpassed that limit by one day, so that day will be added on the end of the year.
Also at the meeting, Kewanee High School graduate Zach Murphy suggested that Kewanee schools co-op with Wethersfield schools on a speech program.
Murphy said Wethersfield no longer has a speech teacher, and a co-op program would provide students with more opportunities to participate in speech.
