Boiler Girls cruise to win over Orion

The Kewanee girls basketball team hit the road to Orion Monday night and picked up a 59-41 non-conference win over the Chargers. 

The Boiler Girls outscored Orion 18-9 in the first quarter and 20-10 in the second frame to mount a 38-19 halftime lead. 

Freshman guard Bailey VanWinkle scored 10 first half points to lead the Kewanee offense. The junior tandem of Tejhiana Amos and Mya Dearing each scored eight and freshman Damaris Diaz added six.

Kamryn Brown topped Orion with eight first half points. 

Orion was able to slow the Boiler Girls’ momentum in the third quarter, but most of the damage had already been done. The Kewanee lead was 51-33 heading into the fourth quarter. 

Lexi Christiansen and Avah Jones combined to score 11 third quarter points for Orion. Tejhiana Amos added six more points (in the fourth quarter) to her game-high 16 points. 

Bailey VanWinkle scored 13 points, Dearing added 12 and Diaz chipped in with eight in the win. 

Brown scored a dozen for the Chargers, Jones had 11 and Christiansen chipped in with 10 points. 

Frosh-soph win in OT

In the frosh-soph prelim, the Boiler Girls were ahead 12-8 after the first quarter, but Orion charged back with a big 12-5 second frame to take a 20-17 lead at the half.

Orion held a 26-25 lead after three quarters, but the Boiler Girls outscored Orion 6-5 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. 

Clucas and Kieryn Abernathy each made a free throw in OT to get Kewanee the 33-31 win. 

Grace Clucas scored 13 points in the first three quarters and 14 for the game. Abernathy added seven points in the win.
