‘Draw Me Bill’ success is more love of the draw than luck

“Draw Me Bill” is returning to the Galva Arts Council’s Exchange Street location on Saturday, Jan. 13.

The afternoon workshops are scheduled according to age and held at these times:

Kids (9-13) from 1 – 1:45 pm
Teens (14-18) from 2 – 2:45 pm
Adults (18+) from 3 – 3:45 pm

The talented artist, who signs his work as Bill Douglas, has been creating caricatures and cartoons for over 20 years. His website declares that he can make his customers anything they want to be. Superhero? Movie star? Pirate? Pictured with their favorite movie star?

“I can do that,” said Douglas.

Douglas grew up before the internet, Pixar and video games.

“I became fascinated with cartooning as a kid, reading the comics in the local newspaper – in particular, Charles Schulz’s ‘Peanuts’” he said, adding that the combination of words and pictures to tell a story was very exciting to a young mind.

He found pen and paper a great outlet that continued to adulthood. He also credits the gentleman who routinely visited his first-grade class with artwork from the local library. After each presentation, the students would engage in an art project related to the painting or drawing.

A versatile artist, Douglas possesses a portfolio of designs that includes book covers, calendars, arcade games, coloring books and magazines. He also creates museum exhibits. Caricatures, however, are at the top of his list.

“People are my favorite things to draw,” said Douglas.

Well-known in and around the Galva area, he has created his portraits at the Olaf Krans Art Festival, the Levitt Amp Summer Concert Series and last year at the Galva Arts Council. He plans to return to all three, making the Jan. 13 workshop his first repeat performance.

Draw Me Bill’s success is more than the luck of the draw, it’s the love of the draw.

Those interested in participating in the upcoming event are asked to contact the Arts Council on their webpage at www.galvaartscouncil.org or message them on their Facebook page.

The workshop is free, but donations are appreciated.
