A 25-year-old employee of the Kewanee Animal Shelter is recovering after being attacked by a dog Saturday morning.
The Kewanee Police Department received the call at 7:14 am on Nov. 25 from the shelter for assistance in corralling a dog that had bitten a shelter worker. According to police, a 37-year-old passerby, who stopped to assist the shelter worker, was also bitten several times. Both victims were taken to the hospital. The shelter worker received a severe bite to the bicep that required multiple stitches.
Deputy Police Chief Michael Minx said two officers were able to secure the dog without incident, and it is currently being held on a 10-day confinement at the pound.
Shelter employee Sue Gruszeczka said the dog, a year-old tan pit mix named Finn, had only been at the shelter for about a week. The dog was impounded after it was found, along with female pit bull, tied up and abandoned at Northeast Park. After a week-long stay in the pound, the dog was relocated to the shelter for adoption.
Gruszeczka said the worker had the dog out in the side yard and was bringing it back into the building when it bit her.
“I don’t know what triggered it,” said Gruszeczka.
The dog will remain in confinement until next week and will then be evaluated. Ultimately the board of directors for the Henry County Humane Society of Kewanee will decide on the dog’s outcome.
