Geese, Braves and Storm post Keller wins

During Wednesday’s nights action at the Wally Keller Invitational, Wethersfield (2-1) beat Stark County (1-2), 60-49. Annawan (2-1) took down Elmwood (1-2), 42-29 and Bureau Valley (2-1) defeated Putnam County (1-2), 50-38.

Wethersfield vs Stark County 

The Wethersfield Flying Geese got off to a slow start Wednesday night against Stark County, but a huge 30-point fourth quarter helped propel them to a 60-49 win over the Rebels.

Stark County jumped out to a10-4 lead and was still ahead 21-18 at halftime.

Dillon Horrie and Colin Hornback each hit two 3-pointers to help Wethersfield outscore Stark County 14-11 in the second quarter. Luke Rewerts scored nine of 11 points for the Rebels in the second quarter. 

Horrie added eight points in the third quarter for the Geese and Will Rumbold had five for the Rebels. The score was tied at 30 heading into the final quarter. 

The Geese erupted for 30 points in the final quarter. Stark County caught fire as well and scored 19, but Landon Sauers’ hot hand proved too much for the Rebels to counter.

Sauer scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter. Hornback made five baskets in the game and all five were 3-pointers. He had three of them in the final frame. 

Matthew Bowser scored eight in the fourth and Ross Saner added six for Stark County. 

The Geese had three players score in double figures (Sauer had 27, Hornback 15 and Horrie 14). 

Stark County had three players in double digits as well (Rewerts had 13 and Bowser and Saner each had a dozen). 

Annawan vs Elmwood 

Elmwood held a slim 10-9 lead after the first quarter, but Annawan held Elmwood to four second quarter points and moved ahead 18-14 at the half. 

Dillon Ketelsen-Anton scored all eight of his points in the first for the Braves. 

Annawan stretched their lead to 31-21 after three quarters of play. Gabe Sims scored nine of Annawan’s 13 third quarter points and he had 15 of his game-high 16 points in the second half. 

Jackson McGee and Jimmy Babcock led Elmwood with nine and eight points, respectively. 

Bureau Valley vs Putnam County

The Bureau Valley Storm built a 17-13 first quarter lead and expanded that lead, 29-22, at the break. 

Corban Chhim had 10 first half points for Bureau Valley and Landon Birdsley had seven in the half in support.

Owen Saepharn led Putnam County with 10 first half points and had 14 for the game. Orlando Harris scored seven first half points and finished with 12 for the Cougars. 

The Storm lead grew to 40-28 heading into final quarter of play. 

Elijah Endress and Birdsley scored seven and five more for the Storm in the second half. 

Chhim led BV with 13 points, Birdsley had 12 and Endress added nine.
