What’s happening at the library in June

Celebrate 150 years of KPLD with trivia

The 150 Celebration is a little more subdued for June. Throughout the month, the library will have an interactive Jeopardy bulletin board to test patrons’ trivia skills before the July festivities. They’re still fine-tuning some details but look forward to the July 19 trivia night. Teams of eight to 10 people are invited to sign up to compete. Registration will begin in June. Check back in with them near July for more details.

Native American Storytelling with Gerald Savage – June 10 at 6 p.m.

Stories that provide life lessons, explain elements of nature around us and reinforce values have been passed down through generations of Native Americans through the practice of storytelling. On June 10 at 6 p.m. Gerald Savage, who is also Chief White Winnebago of the HoChunk Nation, will be at the library to share stories from his and other Native American tribes.

Get ready for a puzzle race – June 13 at 4 p.m. 

Love putting together puzzles?  Think you could do it in less than two hours?  Grab a team and sign up for our puzzle race. Teams of four to six people, at least one of whom must be 18 or older, and will compete using the same puzzle. Prizes will be awarded to all of the winners. To sign up, stop by any of the service desks in the library or call 852-4505. There is only room for five teams, so hurry to make sure you get a spot. Don’t have a team? Don’t worry, register and you will be teamed up when you arrive.

DIY dice box decoration craft for adults June 17 at 4 p.m.

Join staff and level up your dice box. Whether you’re a tabletop gamer, a Dungeons and Dragons fan, or just love to create, you’re invited to customize a wooden dice box with paint, markers or stickers. You’ll also learn some simple techniques to make the box of your dreams. The library has all of the supplies covered, just bring your creativity.

Dean Karau Presents: Staring into the Yawning Gulf of Eternity – June 19 at 5:30 p.m.

Trailblazing architect and first licensed Black architect in Illinois, Kewanee native Walter Thomas Bailey left a mark on American architecture and African American history. Local author Dean Karau will be at the library to share insights on Bailey’s life and legacy. He will discuss Bailey’s groundbreaking work, the challenges he faced, and his enduring impact on the field. Copies of Karau’s book will be available at the program.

Miss Make-Believe Presents: The Kindness Show – June 20 at 3 p.m.

Kindness is often portrayed as weakness, rather than a strength, when we all know otherwise. Join Youth Services staff for Miss Make-Believe’s Kindness Show where she’ll illustrate how important kindness, empathy, and community are through an engaging and interactive experience including magic, music, storytelling, and puppetry.  

How to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft — June 25 at 2 p.m.   

We’ve all heard the stories of friends and family members falling victim to identity theft, phishing or scams and we’ve all seen the havoc that can reap.  That’s why it is important to keep up to date on ways to protect yourself and your information. Join staff on June 25 at 2 p.m. when Detective Sgt. Jake Koster of the Henry County Sheriff’s Department will be here to teach attendees how to avoid the pitfalls that lead to identity theft.

Adult Board Game Night – June 27 at 3 p.m.

The library staff can’t be the only ones who love board games but can never find anyone to play with. Join them to meet fellow board game enthusiasts. Unplug and unwind with some classic board games and a couple of the modern ones too.  Ages are restricted to 18 and over for this program, but staff still won’t leave out the best part of a program: snacks.

Young Adult Programming

Are you interested in creating arts and crafts while hanging out with friends and meeting new people?  Then join staff June 11 from 2-3 p.m. for the Young Adult Craft Club.  Each month, participants meet to craft a new project.

On June 18 at 1:45 p.m. the library will be hosting our monthly meeting of the Young Adult Homeschoolers’ Hobby Hangout. Homeschooling students between 13 and 18 are invited to join staff to share interests while improving various skill sets. Whether you’re interested in crocheting, chess or even have a service project that you need to work on, stop in the library and work alongside your friends.

Calling all manga and anime aficionados, join us for our Young Adult Manga Book Club. If you’re between 13 and 18 and are interested in graphic novels or manga, join us Thursday, June 26, at 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. as we read and discuss the manga series Demon Slayer.

Get ready for gaming, snacks and hanging out with friends. On June 20, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. anyone between 13 and 18 can stop into the Young Adult room on the lower level. Attendees will be playing different games on the library’s gaming television. And to top it off, staff will provide lots of snacks to enjoy.

Interested in planting a garden or want to have some potted plants around the house? Join staff Tuesday, June 17 at 1:30 p.m. for our YA Seed and Plant Workshop.  

Sixth through 12th graders are invited to join staff for their Mini Field Day. Stop by Thursday, June 26 at 1 p.m. for some fun in the sun. The library staff have some relay races, obstacle courses and a few other challenges planned to level up your summer.

Youth Programming

Baby and Preschool Storytime continues this month. Infants through preschool age children and their adults are invited to attend Storytime Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m. followed by sidewalk chalk and bubble time.  If you can’t make it in person, catch story time live on Facebook at 1 p.m. the same day. If you’re interested in the Music and Movement Storytime, stop in Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. and let’s get moving.  

Throughout the Summer Reading Program, the library will have different crafts for two age groups every other week.

Elementary-age children are invited to stop in June 5and 6 from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m.-noon to make a DIY Hungry Hippos game. On June 19, 19 and 20 from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to noon, they are invited to join staff to make a Lego Zipline craft.  

For preschool aged patrons, stop in June 11-14, during the library’s open hours, to make straw rocket craft. They can also stop in June 25-28, during library hours, to make a Magic Tablet craft. 

Staff will also have a new grab ‘n go kit for you to pick up every other week. A Lego-Face Balancer kit will be available the weeks of June 8 and 16 and a Pencil Jenga kit starting June 23. 

Elementary-aged children are invited to join in on Wednesdays throughout Summer Reading for board game afternoons. Staff will have classic board and card games for you to play from 1 to 3 p.m.

Adult Book Club – June 16 at 2 and 6 p.m.

The next meeting date of our Adult Book Club is June 16, where we will be discussing The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride.  As always, the library will hold two meetings, one at 2 p.m. and another at 6; you’re invited to either. The staff asks that anyone attending the evening meeting to enter the building through the elevator entrance on the north side of the building on First Street. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Information Services desk on the lower level.  

If you can’t make the meeting this month, next month, the club will be reading The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post by Allison Pataki.  

Cinema @ the Carnegie

Each month, staff will be showing a different movie. If you’d like to attend, but can’t meet at either of the showings, stop by the Information Services desk and let staff know when would work better for you; they’re always trying to improve their scheduling to better fit your schedule. 

While you’re here, let staff know if there’s a specific movie that you’d like them to show. In June, the showings will be on the 12th at 2 p.m. and the 24th at 10:30 a.m.

Digital Literacy Class 

Since there was still interest in our digital literacy classes, the library is bringing them back. Once again, available topics are Essential Computer Skills, which would be basic computer skills; Essential Software Skills, or office productivity skills; and Technology Tools in Daily Life, which will teach you practical computer skills.  

If you have a more specific question, you are welcome to stop in during the class and staff will work with you to figure it out. Classes are now by appointment, so give them a call at 309-852-4505 and ask for the Information Services desk to schedule yours.

Creativity @ the Carnegie

Do you enjoy knitting, crochet, embroidery, cross stitch or quilting? Come and join us at the Kewanee Public Library in the Community Room on the second Tuesday of each month from 4 to 6 p.m. This is an adult group sponsored by the Friends of the Kewanee Public Library for those who would like to enjoy the comradery of others while creating their own fiber projects.
