Surveillance footage nabs a burglary suspect

The Kewanee Police Department has arrested a 58-year-old man on charges relating to a burglary at a business in the 200 block of West Second Street.

William Withrow faces allegations of criminal trespass to real property, a Class B misdemeanor, and criminal damage to property, a Class A misdemeanor.

The incident occurred on Saturday, Dec. 2 at approximately 4:34 pm. Police received a report of a possible burglary in progress and arrived at the scene. Unable to locate any suspects at the time, the police began an investigation into the matter.

The business reported property damage, but no items were reported stolen. An examination of the surveillance footage from the business and neighboring establishments led the police to Withrow. A video of the relevant surveillance footage was also shared by the business owner to social media platforms.

Withrow was apprehended by police on Monday, Dec. 4. After his arrest, he was released with a notice to appear in Henry County Circuit Court. A court date has been set for Jan. 8.

A Class A misdemeanor carries a potential maximum sentence of 364 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
