State legislators to have Kewanee office

By Michael Berry    September 27, 2023
This vacant office in the Kewanee depot will soon be a district office for two state legislators.

Kewanee will soon be home to a local office for two state legislators who represent the city in Springfield.

The City Council Monday approved the use of an office in the Kewanee depot by State Sen. Neil Anderson, R-Rock Island, and State Rep. Travis Weaver, R-Peoria.

The office space in the depot had been occupied by the Henry County Tourism Bureau, but has been vacant since that agency ceased to exist.

“I am excited that both of our representatives recognize Kewanee,” Mayor Gary Moore said.

He said the office will probably be staffed two or three days a week. The staffers will provide constituent services, and will do no “politicking,” Moore said.

Also Monday:

— The council went along with a recommendation from the Zoning Board of Appeals and denied a request from Dan Stollenwerk for a variance to the regulation of the height of a fence on his property at 801 Elmwood Ave.

Stollenwerk wanted to put up an eight-foot fence; a city ordinance limits fences to six feet.

A neighbor objected to the change, saying the only part of the fence Stollenwerk wants to raise is the section facing her home.

The zoning board voted 5-0 to deny the request.

— Another zoning board action approved by the council grants a variance to building height and setback requirements for an accessory structure on the property of James Wiggin at 311 Fifth Ave.

Wiggin asked for a variance of 6 1/2 feet to the height limit of 18 feet, and of two feet to the five feet of setback required.

The zoning board voted 4-1 to approve the request.
