Prairie Chicken Arts Festival set for July 21 & 22

The annual Prairie Chicken Arts Festival will be held this year on Friday and Saturday, July 21 and 22 and feature the Chalk Art Competition, a flea market, kids games and activities as well as the addition of “Murals Come to Life.”

The murals event will take place on Saturday in the Rotary Tent from 2 to 4 pm and offer a dramatic presentation performed by Junior and Senior High School students from the Kewanee Summer Theater Camp. The event is made possible by a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant.

A junior and senior teen dance is also scheduled on Friday in the Rotary Tent from 7 to 11 pm.
An antique tractor drive and display will take place on Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm.

As in years past, a giant sand pile, sponsored by Ratliff Bros., will be placed in Dooley’s parking lot.

The annual “Guns and Hoses,” Breakfast, put on by the Kewanee Police and Fire departments, will be held Saturday from 7 to 10 am in the Johnson’s Appliance parking lot.

Student artwork will be displayed in the windows at various businesses downtown, and the Central Jr. High Band, followed by the Community Band, “Jazz on the Side” will perform under the Rotary Tent on Saturday from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs.

More fun will be in the form of Magic by Cory at New View Furniture. There will be two shows on Saturday at 10 am and then again at 2 pm.

Tim Bryner will be providing a ChainSaw Carving Demonstration Friday at 5 pm at Berrien Park and then again on Saturday at the Chalk Art Track.

Cerno’s Bar & Grill will have a beer garden at the Rotary Tent from 7 to 11 pm, and Trip Hazard will perform in the Rotary Tent 7-11 pm in front of Cerno’s Bar & Grill. Attendees are again asked to bring lawn chairs.

The Kewanee Historical Society and Museum will be open with special hours on both days from 10 am to 4 pm.

Kids activities and games will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday. The KPD will be in the dunk tank and the KFD will set up the Hose House. Farmgate Market will provide pedal karts. There will also be face painting, pony rides and food vendors set up in Berrien Park. In addition, a duck pond, sponsored by McDonald’s will be set up next to the Chalk Art on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
