The occupants, including a number of pets, of an East Prospect Street home survived a fire that started in the attic of the house Tuesday afternoon.
The fire department responded to the fire call at 318 E. Prospect St., and Fire Chief Stephen Welgat said the attic was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Witnesses also said smoke was pouring from the back of the house.
Welgat said the people got out of the house safely. Firefighters searched the house for a dog, a number of cats and a snake that were being kept as pets.
Welgat said it appeared that none of the animals were injured in the fire.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Tuesday evening.
