Obituary For JoAnn (Oakes) Stroup

Kewanee – JoAnn (Oakes) Stroup, 92, of Kewanee, formerly of Wyoming, passed away at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Arcadia Care of Kewanee. JoAnn was born on September 4, 1933, in Bradford to Richard and Mary (Duffy) Oakes. In 1951, JoAnn married Dale Stroup of Dunlap. Married in Peoria, they shared 65 wonderful years together before his passing in 2016.

She is survived by two daughters, Louella (Doug) Moreland of Georgetown, TX and Lynette (Kevin) Manthe of Kewanee; four grandchildren, Joshua MacMurdo of Fallon, Nevada, Jennifer MacMurdo of South Berwick, Maine, Dana Peterson of West Jersey, and Melissa Moreland, of Georgetown, TX; and one great granddaughter, Abby Peterson. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Pat and Pete Oakes of Wyoming; and one sister, Jean Walker Swartz of Kewanee.

JoAnn worked for the United States Post Office as a clerk, and city carrier in Wyoming, Postmaster in Castleton, and retired after 37 years in her last position as Postmaster in Wyoming. She was a 55-year member of the Wyoming American Legion Auxiliary.

After retiring, JoAnn and Dale wintered for many years in Alamo, Texas, where they made many friends. She enjoyed playing cards, knitting, crocheting, and Swedish embroidery. She especially loved having “coffee and hamburgers” with great granddaughter, Abby Peterson in her play kitchen, as well as spoiling her little dogs.

Her funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2025, at Haskell Funeral and Cremation Services in Wyoming. Pastor John Reside will officiate. Burial will follow in Wyoming Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Wyoming American Legion Auxiliary.
