Obituary For Greg Guy Stetson

Greg Guy Stetson, 76, passed away peacefully September 25, 2024, in Colorado Springs, Co. after an 18-month battle with ALS. Born in Kewanee December 26, 1947, to Harold “Bus” Stetson and Florence Blake Stetson Papp, he had one sister, Pat (Gordon) Petry of Pekin, Il.

Greg grew up in central Illinois farming country, attending Neponset Twp. High School, where he participated in student government, football, chorus, drama, (and “mischief” with his cousin Chuck Blake.) His love of long-distance running started then and continued all his life. He also took up skiing and loved learning on the short, icy Wisconsin slopes. A diehard Chicago Bears fan since 1962, Greg “built a lot of character” with “Da Bears” and U of I football.

Greg went on to earn a BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Illinois, and an MBA from the University of Chicago. The last working years of his life were in the optical disc industry, first as a financial controller, the last five as president of MAM-A INC.

He met and married the love of his life, his wife of 26 years, Patricia Nemeth, in Huntsville, Ala. shortly before the move to Colorado Springs. He acquired stepdaughter, Julieanne, along with Patricia. Julieanne and her husband Jed Cothren blessed him with 3 grandchildren: Jordan, who has enlisted in the Air Force, and Jace and Olivia, still in elementary school.

Devoted Christians, Greg and Patricia became congregants at Woodmen Valley Chapel about six years ago and served as greeters. That church body has been continuously supportive through Greg’s illness.

Besides Patricia, Julieanne and her family, Greg leaves behind several nephews and nieces and many friends. Greg’s favorite Bible verse was from 2 Timothy 4:7-- “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” A friend, contemplating his own impending heavenly journey, finished this verse: “The best is yet to be.”

Greg will be loved forever.

Greg was one of the kindest men I've ever known. His speed walking in Discovery was legendary. He had his own unique gate. I looked forward to his informative e-mails. He and Patricia are woven into the frabic of my life. I will miss him.

Greg Stetson was a year behind me in High School, but we were friends through sports and other activities that may have had questionable results. Greg was a good friend and will be missed. Best wishes to all his family. Jon and Gail Pickering
