Obituary For Gareth Dean "Gary" Kenney

GALVA – Gareth Dean “Gary” Kenney, USMC Ret., 86, of Galva, died Friday, March 8, 2024, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

He was born June 25, 1937, the son of Elbert L. and Fern B. (Carlson) Kenney. Survivors include cousins, friends and acquaintances including Warren and Wanda Kieft of Kewanee. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Norma.

Gary moved many times as a child and graduated from Galva High School in 1955. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp and was stationed in California. He later served in the Army National Guard working as a cook. He was a member of the Galva American Legion Hagberg-Hamlin Post 45 and the Galva Fusiliers. Gary was a reformed alcoholic and was an Alcoholics Anonymous member and leader. He was also an avid sports fan and his claim to fame was being able to guard Marques Haynes of the Harlem Globetrotters at a charity game.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 12 at Galva Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Galva Fusiliers. A visitation will be held from 10:00-10:45 a.m., Tuesday at Rux Funeral Home in Galva prior to the services at the cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Galva American Legion Hagberg-Hamlin Post 45.
