Volunteers will be needed in preparation of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26.
The Kewanee Veterans Council will place flags at the gravesite of local veterans in eight area cemeteries on Friday, May 23. Those interested in volunteering to place flags are asked to meet at the Pleasant View Cemetery at 8 a.m.
Hundreds of flags will be placed in Evergreen Memorial Gardens just outside Kewanee, with another 1500 to 1800 flags placed in Pleasant View. The placing of the flags has become a local tradition and serves as a reminder of the countless individuals who served and lost their lives for their country.
On Monday, May 26, the KVC will hold their annual Memorial Day Service at Veterans Park at 11 a.m. Last year the ceremony was held indoors due to rain in the forecast, but this year, the rain should stay away, although the temperature is predicted to be unseasonably cooler.
Participating in the service this year will be the Kewanee High School chorus and band, Mayor Gary Moore, who will offer a few words, and TJ Giesenhagen, who will act as the speaker for the service.
Attending will be Kewanee Council members and the commanders of the local veterans’ organizations as well as the Poppy Boy and Girl for American Legion Post 31, Gavin and Chloe Cernovich, and Preston Paxton and Charlie Paxton for VFW, Post 8978.
KVC President Glenn Morey and the mayor will conduct the laying of the wreath and there will be a reading of the names of passed veterans.
