Mayor Gary Moore wants action on resurfacing West South Street, and he wants it right away.

“I want to see a plan for West South Street — when it will be resurfaced, and when the striping will be complted,”

“This is a major thoroughfare, and it is used not only by a majority of Kewanee residents, but also by a number of people from the surrounding area.

“I’m guessing I’m not the only one still receiving complaints about (West South Street),” the mayor said. “We need a plan in place so we can give residents a definitive answer.

“‘I don’t know’ will no longer be an option,” he said.

Moore also signaled that city employees will be held more responsible when there are problems with city operations.

“I’ve been mayor for six years now, and in those six years I’ve taken a lot of backlash from people,” he said. “In some cases those people have no idea what they are talking about, or are just plain wrong.”

In other cases, the mayor said, he has been blamed for things that should have been taken care of by other people employed by the city.

“I am tired of being the punching bag. I will accept the blame, but I will not apologize.

“Things need to be done, and they need to be done better. From this point forward, all city employees will be held to a standard that Kewanee deserves.

“I will not accept excuses. I want to see results.”

Moore also congratulated local school sports teams on their successes this season, and pointed out that Bock Inc., which operates the wastewater treatment plant and the city’s two water treatment plants, has completed 10 years with no lost-time employee accidents.
