
The death of a Kewanee police officer has shaken the Kewanee Police Department and the community that he served.
Sgt. James R. “Jimmy” Mock, 35, died Sunday, June 2. Mr. Mock was a 2007 graduate of Stark County High School and a Coast Guard veteran. He joined the Kewanee Police Department, attaining the rank of sergeant last year. He was a detective with the department, and was involved with the department’s DAART (Drug and Alcohol Addiction Response Team).
Police Chief Stephen Kijanowski has said that the purpose of the DAART effort is to get at the root causes of crime, which are often drug and alcohol addiction and mental health issues.

Mr. Mock attended First Christian Church in Kewanee and enjoyed outdoor activities like farming, fishing and kayaking,
Born in Galesburg on May 22, 1989, Mr. Mock was the son of James R. Mock and Martha Dykeman. He is survived by his fiancé, Maya Padilla; his son, Brendan Mock, and Brendan’s mother, Ann, both of Trevor, Wis.; his father, stepmother and brother, Jim, Miriam and David Mock of LaFayette; aunts and uncles Sheryl and John Peterson of Rockton, Ill., and Susan Mock and Earl Elliott of Elmwood; and cousins Dana and Lydia Peterson. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Nancy Mock.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rux Funeral Home in Galva, with Pastor John Reside officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens, rural Kewanee.
