
A Kewanee man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with a robbery at a Kewanee gaming parlor.
Nicklaus Smith, 23, faces multiple charges, including armed violence, a class X felony; aggravated robbery, a Class 2 felony; intimidation, a Class 3 felony; possession of methamphetamine less than 5 grams, a Class 3 felony; aggravated unlawful use of weapons, a Class 4 felony; aggravated assault, a Class A misdemeanor; and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a Class A misdemeanor.
Police gave this account of the arrest:
At 1:56 p.m. Thursday, Kewanee dispatch received a 911 call from a man reporting an incident at EZT Gaming, 813 E. Third St. The caller reported that a man in a silver Chevy Silverado was forcing him to withdraw money from his bank account, brandishing a silver revolver.
Officers located the described pickup truck and detained Smith without any issues. Located within the vehicle was a loaded silver revolver.
Following an investigation, Nicklaus was formally arrested and transported to the Kewanee Police Department before being transferred to the Henry County Jail.
Possible penalties for the offenses Smith is charged with are:
Class X felony: Mandatory sentence of 6-30 years in state prison
Class 2 felony: Sentencing range of 3-7 years in prison
Class 3 felony: Sentencing range of 2-5 years in prison
Class 4 felony: Sentencing range of 1-3 years prison
Class A Misdemeanor – Up to 364 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500
All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Smith has a preliminary hearing set for 9 a.m. on Feb. 12.
