The two incumbents running for re-election to the Kewanee City Council share a goal of improving Kewanee’s streets in the next few years.

Tyrone Baker and Steve Faber are among five candidates on the ballot in the April 1 municipal election.

Tyrone Baker

Baker, who is the warden at Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg, listed street improvements among his priorities in the upcoming term.

He also would work toward reducing violence and drug crimes in the city, he said.

In the past few months the City Council has discussed a lack of opportunity locally for mental-health treatment, and Baker said he would like to see such treatment be made available locally.

Steve Faber

Faber is retired after working 38 years as the mechanic for the Henry County Highway Department. During council discussions of street maintenance issues, he has expressed his views on proposed street projects.

Faber said he wants the city to have a plan for street repair projects.

He also expressed concern for safety of children walking to school, and said he’d like to see a safe walkway along McClure Street from Wethersfield schools to East Street. The walkway would enable students to walk along one side of the street while vehicles stayed on the other side.

Faber also noted the the council is responsible for spending the taxpayers’ money wisely.

In all, five names will be on the ballot April 1. Baker and Faber will be joined by Adam Cernovich, Scott Withrow and Obrey Blumenshine.
