
September means pumpkin time and apple picking and while the fall temperatures can’t be described as exactly crisp yet, the time for trips to orchards and pumpkin patches are upon us.
In the Kewanee area, within an hour’s drive, are several pumpkin farms and patches, nurseries offering fall items and even a place to pick your own apples. Here’s a look at some places to visit:

The Pumpkin Place is just a short drive away. Located at 21416 N. Holmes Rd. in Princeville, the business offers a “one stop shop for fall,” according to the owner. Offering over 285 varieties of pumpkins, squashes and gourds, the Pumpkin Place is open daily until Halloween from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. In addition to pumpkins, the business offers Indian corn, corn stalks, fall scented candles, fall freeze dried candies, broom corn and bundled broom corn. Also offered are laser-engraved knick-knacks, wagons to hold your pumpkins and popcorn.

A fall staple in the area, Tanner’s Orchard is located at 740 Illinois 40 in Speer. The business offers apples, apple picking, apple cider, pumpkins, mums, gifts, a corn maze, a bakery and farm market and plenty for the kids to do. Tanner’s Orchard is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through October.

Located between Kewanee and Atkinson, Frank Pumpkin Farm is at 21730 Moens Rd. The farm offers mums, pumpkins, gourds, pumpkin stacks and broom corn swags. The hours are weekends only, Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm


Located outside of Galva at 2774 State Route 17, Farmgate Market is an old dairy farm that has been transformed into a fall fun park for all ages. The fun park features fun things for families to do and is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. But the farm is open Monday-Friday, from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and customers can shop for pumpkins, gourds and other fall items.


Just outside Kewanee is Nature’s Creations Greenhouse and Farm and the business is awash with fall color. The greenhouse is located at 21229 N. 500th Ave. With the switch to autumn, the greenhouse is offering popcorn, broom corn bundles, dried Tennessee spinner gourds, pumpkins, gourds, fall ornamental plants, potted fall arrangements and mums. Fall hours are Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Well-known to area residents, Sunnyfield Greenhouse, located at 2440 E. 2550th St., Galva, offers homegrown mums, pumpkins, gourds, fall ornamental plants and potted fall arrangements. The hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
