The Galva Arts Council (GAC) is searching for people to join its board of directors. Board President Linda Getter’s invitation is “Join Our Arts Council Board: Make a Difference through the Power of the Arts.”
Board members aren’t required to be artistic, said Getter.
“What we need are those passionate about enriching the quality of life in our community through advocacy of the arts. If you want to shape the cultural vibrancy of the area, the Arts Council board has several open seats at the table,” she said.
Board members have always come from a variety of backgrounds.
“Teachers, human resource professionals, retail managers, bakers, stay-at-home mothers, nurses and bankers to name a few,” said Getter.
The current nine-person board also includes two local high school students, with a goal of increasing it to twelve.
Getter, who is moving into her second year as president, was quick to point out that board members and volunteers have always been at the heart of the GAC’s mission to foster creativity and bring the arts to life in the community.
“It is a hands-on commitment,” said Getter, “where time and talent will make a direct impact.”
Opportunities and obligations of being a board member are:
–Monthly Meetings: Attendance at board meetings on the first Monday of each month at the GAC building from 7:00–8:30 PM.
–Active Participation: Being present and contributing time to at least two of each of the following areas—coffeehouses, events, workshops/classes, committees, and Levitt AMP summer concerts.
–Leadership Role: Helping to organize and chair events and programs, set the calendar, and guide the strategic planning and policy-making that shape the work.
The board is entirely volunteer-driven—there are no paid staff.
“This means passionate, results-oriented individuals power every decision, program, and initiative we undertake,” said Getter.” Accepting the responsibilities of a board member is a meaningful commitment,” adding “effective governance requires effort and time, but it is immensely rewarding.”
For over three decades, the GAC has showcased art, music and classroom experiences for all ages. Popular offerings have been coffee houses, art and photo contests, holiday programs such as the mini tree festival, garden shows, and craft activities for the younger crowd.
The building, located on Exchange Street, is a popular venue for poetry readings, as well as private parties and celebrations.
“Many of our most successful programs are offered annually and come together like a well-oiled machine,” said Getter.
An art show is planned for mid-April, followed by the annual “Spring in Bloom” event in May.

Getter hopes interested parties will attend the March 14 coffee house featuring the Celtic band EXORNA. Music begins at 7 and refreshments are provided.
“Join us for a great night and check out what a great organization we are. We love to show off our building and the wonderful things the GAC offers,” she said.
