Members of the Galva Arts Council celebrated the 25th anniversary of the “Mini Tree Festival” with a stellar showcase of beautifully decorated trees and wreaths. Started in 1998 by Marge Dickinson, former Galva resident, and one of the main founders of the Arts Council, it remains one of the most popular activities and largest fundraisers for the group.

In early November, would-be-decorators were provided with a tree or wreath of their choice, with a promise to return it decked out in holiday décor. It’s become more popular with each passing year, and the designs and themes vary from whimsical to religious. What is more, there has never been a duplicate in all the years they have been on display.

Amy Martin, Arts Council board secretary, said the activity is open to all age groups and artistic levels and the event draws entries from Galva and surrounding towns. This year, Martin said, there were two dozen entries, with twelve trees and twelve wreaths to admire – and one of those entries will win.

Raffle tickets were sold during Galva’s Ol’ Fashioned Christmas, which featured a soup luncheon, kids crafts and a chocolate sale during the day, with the winning tickets drawn during the evening’s Coffee House.

Martin said the Council’s winter activities culminate with the “Tour of Lights” on Jan. 13. Plans for a workshop with “Draw Me Bill” featuring Bill Craig, whose caricatures are a favorite, is also in the works. March brings in the Celtic band, Exorna, which begins the lineup of performers for the quarterly Coffee Houses.

Martin said that the group is always looking for board members and volunteers. Anyone interested in the Arts Council activities is encouraged to check out their Facebook page, website, galvaartscouncil.org, or phone (563) 293-6986. The Galva Arts Council Building is located at 128 Exchange St. in downtown Galva.
