The occupants of a Whitney Avenue home were at home early Tuesday morning when a fire damaged a structure behind their house.
Fire Chief Stephen Welgat reported that two fire trucks were dispatched at 1:15 a.m. to the home in the 500 block of Whitney Avenue.
A pergola/entertainment area in the back yard was “fully involved,” Welgat reported.
Firefighters hooked up to a nearby hydrant and had the fire out within five minutes, according to the chief.
The residents were home at the time and were unharmed, Welgat reported.
He said the fire had been reported by several neighbors and the fire department arrived within three minutes.
Six firemen were on the scene and there were no injuries, Welgat said.
“The entertainment area was deemed a complete loss,” he said.
The fire department’s investigator was at the scene until 4 a.m. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Thursday.
The Kewanee Community Fire Department and Kewanee police assisted.
