If you found a flyer in your front door giving information about applying for federal disaster relief funds after the July tornadoes, rest assured that the flyer is legitimate and not a scam.

Online commenters have suspected the brightly colored flyers could be a scam since the flyer asks to have personal information like Social Security numbers and bank account numbers available when applying for the assistance.

But Matt Schnepple, the county’s director of emergency management, said the flyers aren’t a scam at all.

“It’s 100 percent legitimate,” Schnepple said.

He said FEMA is “continuing to do research” to find residents eligible for the financial assistance not just in Kewanee but anywhere in Henry County where the tornadoes caused damage. The flyers are part of that research.

Schnepple said a relief center for people who had storm damage is being set up at the agency’s headquarters on Routes 34 and 78 south of Kewanee and more information will be available soon. For information about FEMA assistance, click here.
