Dog park planned in Chautauqua Park

Here is the plan for the dog park that will be built in Chautauqua Park.

Kewanee’s dog owners will soon have a place to bring their pets to run around freely and socialize with other dogs.

A dog park is planned for Chautauqua Park, and bids are being sought from contractors who can build the facility.

And the project will be carried out at no cost to the taxpayers, as the Kewanee Park District has received a large donation to pay for it.

The dog park will provide “a pretty large space for the animals,” according to Andy Dwyer, executive director of the park district.

“We’re starting to drive the train on this,” said Dwyer.

He said the park district has received a large donation that will pay for the dog park. The donor’s name is not being released at this time, he said, but will be revealed during a dedication ceremony when the dog park opens.

The dog park will consist of two fenced areas, which will be separated by a fence down the middle. Each section will be 125 by 40 feet.

The facility will be on the east side of the park along Junior Avenue. A 75- by 27-foot paved parking area will be created next to the street.

There will be three handicap-accessible gates into the dog park, which will be surrounded by a fence.

Plans also call for a water line to be installed for a drinking fountain that can be used by dogs and their owners.

There will also be a 30-by15-foot concrete pad, a 20-foot sidewalk from the street to the enclosed area and two concrete pads for benches in the park.

The park district is seeking two sets of bids, one for the concrete work and water line and the other for the fencing. Bids are to be opened April 14, with construction to begin after that.

Dwyer said the dog park shouldn’t conflict with the disc golf course in the park.
