The City Council Monday hired an engineering firm to plan a “thorough street maintenance program” for Kewanee.
The council passed an ordinance to hire Hutchison Engineering “to evaluate pavement conditions and develop a thorough street maintenance program.” The ordinance noted Hutchison’s experience in preparing such programs in other communities, and its familiarity with Illinois Department of Transportation “programs and processes.”
Adam Cernovich, who was the leading vote-getter in the April 1 council election but has not yet been sworn into office, said the condition of any sewer or water lines under the streets should be taken into consideration before any projects are initiated.
Also Monday:
— The council approved Mayor Gary Moore’s appointments of David Draminski, Nathan Smith and Clara Hemphill to the Planning Commission and Jeremiah Bruegman to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
— The sale of more acreage in the Kentville Road Industrial Park to Great Dane at $4,500 an acre was approved.
The company parks completed trailers awaiting delivery on the property.
— The agenda for Monday’s meeting had included approval of new three-year contracts with the three city employee unions — firefighters, police officers and municipal workers.
But those votes were postponed because, as Moore said, ”We had some questions on those.”
The mayor told union members in the audience, “Don’t panic,” as the council wanted to “clarify some information” before approving the contracts.
