The Kewanee Park District and the City of Kewanee have a new community initiative to award trees to residents for planting on their property.

Residents can enter to win a free eight-to-10-foot tree, which will be delivered to their home. A drawing on Oct. 25 will determine who receives the trees.

The trees came to the City of Kewanee and the park district through the Trees Forever grant program.

Trees Forever provides funds for trees within certain areas of Kewanee. They must be planted in disadvantaged portions of Kewanee as defined by “Trees Forever.”

Planting assistance will also be available upon request.

People living in areas shaded gray or green on this map are eligible to enter the tree drawing.

Trees must be planted at least six feet from right-of-ways, buildings, sidewalks and other trees, and must be clear of overhead wires.  A utility locate must also be completed before planting .

Winners will be selected at random, and the proposed tree location must meet all requirements prior to delivery.
