City Council lowers cost of special-event liquor licenses

By Michael Berry    March 13, 2024

Action Monday by the City Council will reduce the cost of holding an event on public property in which alcoholic beverages are served.

The council approved an amendment to the city liquor license setting the fee for a “public event license” at $100 for one day, or $150 for a multi-day permit. The multi-day permit is good for up for four days.

Previously, the fee for selling alcohol on public property (streets, alleys and parking lots) was $250 per day.

The ordinance says, “The City of Kewanee desires to have licenses available for special events that help to regulate the sale of liquor at local events without being overly burdensome to event hosts or licensed proprietors of Kewanee establishments that may desire to serve alcohol at special events.”

The ordinance also creates a “catering add-on” for $35 per day for “an individual who will be hosting a catered event who wishes to have alcoholic beverages served during said event.”

The ordinance says those with a public event license must control access to the area where alcohol will be served with temporary fencing. People must be at least 21 to enter the area, and the seller of alcohol must provide wristbands for customers to wear while in the restricted area.

Also Monday, the council approved a special use permit for Blair and Nichelle Morey for a “short-term rental” business in a house at 213 E. Kellogg Ave.

Mrs. Morey said the business will be registered with Airbnb.
