Javon E. Porter, 36, Chicago, faces an additional charge of attempted murder for a shooting incident that left two men injured over the weekend. Porter was arraigned on formal charges in Henry County Circuit Court on Monday.

Porter was arrested by the Kewanee Police Department on Sunday, Oct. 1 following a report of a disturbance and a man with a gunshot wound to his chest. Police arrived on the scene in the 400 block of North Lakeview Avenue around 3:30 am to find two men with gunshot wounds. One man was lying on the sidewalk with a chest wound and another man was located with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. One victim was taken by life flight to a Peoria hospital, while the second victim was treated for his injuries at OSF St. Luke Medical Center and released.

After an multi-agency investigation into the shooting that involved the KPD, the Illinois State Police, and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Porter was identified as the suspect and later located at a Kewanee residence.

He was initially charged with preliminary offenses of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a Class 3 Felony, reckless discharge of a firearm, Class 4 felony, aggravated battery, a Class 4 felony and two charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, Class X felonies. The Henry County State’s Attorney’s Office added the charge of attempted murder, a Class X felony.

The Court appointed Public Defender Lance Camp to represent Porter. The State’s motion to deny the defendant’s pretrial release was granted and the Court found that Porter “poses a real threat to others.”

Porter was remanded into the custody of Henry County. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 10.
