The Fourth of July will be here before we know it, and it’s now time for the annual appeal for financial support for the community fireworks display.
The display is sponsored by the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce, and every year the chamber solicits donations to help defray the cost.
Mark Mikenas, the chamber’s executive director, is again appealing for fireworks donations.
Mikenas said the cost of the fireworks will be up 12% from last year. The increase might have been much higher due to the tariffs on Chinese goods, but Mikenas said the fireworks supplier had obtained a stock of materials before the tariffs went into effect.
One of the major supporters of the fireworks displays is the local Save-A-Lot store. Mikenas said store manager Everett Whitcher has agreed again this year to hold a “round up” campaign where shoppers can agree to round their purchases up to the next dollar to make a contribution.
Anyone who wants to donate to the fireworks campaign may send a contribution to the Chamber of Commerce office at 113 E. Second St. in Kewanee and mark the donation as being for the fireworks fund.
