A structure fire at 505 Payson St. Thursday afternoon started in the laundry area, but whether the flames originated from the dryer is still under investigation, said Kewanee Fire Chief Stephen Welgat.

The Kewanee Fire Department received the report of the house fire at 2:08 pm. Both the Kewanee Police and Fire departments responded. According to one officer on the scene, no one was home at the time, but the homeowner did arrive within a few minutes after the emergency responders were on the scene.

Eight firefighters worked for a little over an hour to extinguish the blaze, which was contained to the laundry room area. There was some smoke and water damage, Chief Welgat said. The water damage was mostly from a hot water heater.

There were no injuries reported.
