With the rash of car thefts and break ins, the Kewanee Police Department will need the help of citizens and their video security footage. Video surveillance often plays a key role in cracking cases for law enforcement.
Just recently, the KPD arrested a man in connection with the burglary of a building. The arrest came after the release of the business’s surveillance footage.
A new proactive effort by the KPD hopes to enhance public safety through a collaboration with the community. The Voluntary Camera Registration Program allows residents and businesses to voluntarily register their security cameras with the police department.
“By doing so, participants help create a comprehensive database of camera locations throughout the city, which can be valuable in investigations and crime prevention efforts,” Dep. Chief Michael Minx said in an email to The Kewanee Voice.
A brief overview of the program includes residents registering their security cameras by filling out a user-friendly online form that comes with step by step instructions.
The purpose of the program is to establish a network of surveillance cameras that can aid law enforcement in investigations such as the recent car thefts that have occurred throughout the city.
“In the event of a crime, registered participants may be contacted by the police department to voluntarily provide footage that could assist in identifying suspects or understanding the sequence of events,” Dep. Chief Minx’s email stated.
The program, however, does ensure privacy and security, and the KPD said its top priority is the privacy of residents. “The information collected through the registration process will be securely stored and used only for law enforcement purposes.”
“We believe that this program fosters a sense of community partnership and plays a crucial role in enhancing public safety,” said Dep. Chief Minx.
