Most mornings, a group of friends can be found gathered at Burger King, sharing coffee and conversation. On Tuesday, their routine took a festive turn when the crew surprised one of their own with a birthday party.

Darlene Wallace of LaFayette, who turned 96 on Sunday, Dec. 14, was greeted with cake, flowers and gifts from her fellow coffee companions. The celebration had originally been planned for Saturday, but snowy weather pushed the party back a few days.

One member of the group said the surprise quickly spread beyond their tables, with other Burger King patrons and staff joining in to help mark the occasion. Wallace, they added, was caught off guard by the party.

The Burger King coffee group includes around nine regulars who meet each morning at the local restaurant for fellowship, conversation and, of course, a hot cup of coffee.
