Kewanee’s Abilities Plus to send 12 athletes to State Special Olympic Games

Recently, 21 athletes from the Abilities Plus in Kewanee participated in the West Central Illinois CUSD #235 Spring Special Olympic games held in Galesburg on April 26. Top finishers from the event will advance to state tournaments. Out of the 21 local competitors, 12 have qualified for state.

“Beyond the medals, every single athlete showed incredible heart, hard work and sportsmanship,” said Executive Director of Abilities Plus Kim Walker. “We couldn’t be prouder of their dedication.”

Special Olympics Illinois operates across 102 counties through 11 regions, each responsible for local programming and competitions. More than a dozen state tournaments are held each year that bring together athletes from all across Illinois.

The Illinois State Special Olympic Games are scheduled for June 12-14 in Bloomington-Normal at Illinois State University.
