Kewanee gathers this month to celebrate Black History

By The Kewanee Voice    February 6, 2026
Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore, U.S. Congressman Eric Sorenson and committee member Rev. Marshall Jones attended the annual Community Black History Extravaganza in February 2024.

The community is invited to attend the annual Black History Extravaganza on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church at 224 W. Prospect St. in Kewanee. The event is hosted by the Community Black History Committee.

This year’s theme is “We’ve all come a mighty long way!” The celebration will include music from local churches, choral performances and a variety of educational presentations. Displays will feature local history, African American dolls, military memorabilia, coin collections and a collection of statues depicting notable African Americans.

The City of Kewanee’s Commission on Human Relations will also announce the winners of its Black History Month essay contest. First and second‑place winners will read their essays during the program.

Refreshments will be served in the Fellowship Hall following the event.
