Mya Dearing scores 1,000th point in KHS loss

Kewanee High School’s varsity girls basketball team lost by one point to a visiting St. Bede team.

Although the varsity team lost in the end by a point, senior Mya Dearing made Boiler history by scoring her 1,000th varsity career point. This is an incredible accomplishment that few athletes ever achieve.

After the game, Dearing received honors from KHS and took pictures with her adoring family, friends and fans.

The following varsity players scored 18 points in the first half:

Damaris DIaz six points, and Mya Dearing, Bailey VanWinkle and Kieryn Abernathy four points each.

In the second half of the game, varsity players scored a total of 20 points:

Mya Dearing scored six points while also making her 1000th varsity career point.

Also scoring were Damaris Diaz with eight, Tejhiana Amos with four and Stardeja Jordan with two.

The JV team played an exciting game with sophomore Damaris Diaz helping to secure the win at the very end. With only six seconds left in the game, sophomore Bailey VanWinkle quickly passed the ball to Diaz to score a layup that put the Boilers up by one point.

The girls basketball team will face off against the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers on Thursday, Jan. 16 in Brockman Gym.
