A hole-in-one on May 31 was nothing new for John Brose; he’d had one before.
But almost as much of an accomplishment came a few days later, when he holed out a five-wood shot for an eagle.
Brose, who is 89, plays most mornings with a group of golfers. They play threesomes and foursomes and compete against each other.
When he hit his driver on the par 3 sixth hole and it rolled into the hole, playing partners Tom Osborne and Steve Brackett witnessed the event.
“It was fun,” Brose said,
A few days later, on the par 5 fourth hole, Brose’s second shot went in for an eagle, which is almost as rare as a hole-in-one.
Brose, a Wethersfield High School graduate and Air Force veteran, didn’t take up golf until he was 50. Now, he said, “I play as much as I can.”
The morning group plays at Baker every day when it isn’t raining. They’ve played despite the high temperatures we’ve been having.
While their normal starting time is 8 a.m., they’ve been starting an hour earlier these days to beat the heat, he said.
