There will be plenty of carnival food options downtown during Kewanee Hog Days over Labor Day weekend, but one thing there won’t be this year is kettle corn.

Uncle Les’ Kettle Corn, a staple vendor for the festival, won’t be attending this year, said Kaye Finney, concession chair for the Hog Days committee.

“I am hoping for 20 to 25 food vendors uptown and at the park,” she said, and she is currently working on replacing the kettle corn spot with a new treat.

But Finney said this probably isn’t the last time festival attendees will get to purchase Uncle Les’ Kettle Corn.

“I think he’ll be back. It just isn’t going to work for him this year,” she said.

Festival attendees can still find kettle corn at West Park, the site of the annual flea market. The event includes food vendors and the more recent addition of musical performances.

C&C Kettle Korn, out of Geneseo, has been at the park for many years, said Finney and the vendor will return this year for anyone in need of a popcorn treat.

Gibler’s Concessions will return to the park as well, bringing water, iced tea, shaved ice and lemonade. Funnel cakes, hot dogs, corn dogs, deep-fried candy bars and hamburgers will also be on the menu at the park.

Finney said she is still receiving emails from food vendors interested in bringing their stands to the festival, and a few vendors, including Steve Jones with Jones Concessions from Louisiana, are expanding their operations. Jones added a slushie machine last year. He also offers nachos, sausages, cheeseburgers and fried desserts such as oreos and funnel cakes.

Finney said she hopes people bring their appetites, and food vendors still interested in joining the Hog Days celebration can email her for information at jeff_finney-123@comcast.net. But there will be plenty of food options for festival goers no matter what they are craving.

“I will have all kinds of food,” Finney said. “So come prepared to eat and eat and eat.”
