Wethersfield’s varsity and junior varsity Scholastic Bowl teams went against Alwood and Princeville Thursday evening at their fifth meet of the season and their second home meet.

The meet resulted in two wins for the varsity team and two losses for the JV. This brought the team standings to 5-5 for varsity and 0-8 for the JV. The first of the matches pitted the Geese against Princeville. The varsity Geese started off strong, with the first tossup being answered correctly by Tyler Graham.

The following bonuses were also correctly answered by the team, which gave them 40 points before the second tossup was asked. Wethersfield’s Daniel Hasse answered one tossup question; Makenna Witte answered two; captain Joey Drawyer answered three and Graham answered nine. Of the 15 of 20 tossups the team buzzed for, nine were correct. Thirty-two of the 60 bonus questions were answered by the Geese, with 11 of them yielding points.

In the end, Wethersfield scored 200 points – their highest score of the season so far. Their score was enough to beat Princeville’s 110 points, leading to a win for Wethersfield.

For the second of the matches, Alwood and Princeville faced each other. The varsity match resulted in a 210-point win for Alwood. The JV match ended with 280 points to Princeville. Wethersfield and Alwood’s teams played for the third match. Wethersfield’s Witte answered three tossups; Drawyer answered four and Graham answered seven. Nine of the 14 answers were correct. The Geese answered 33 of the bonus questions. Eight of those answers scored points for the team.

In total, Wethersfield scored 170 points, which was enough to beat Alwood’s score of 130. The first JV match ended with 10 points for Wethersfield and 200 for Princeville. The third gave Wethersfield 70 points and Alwood 190.

This meet’s fastest buzzers were JV player George Hansen with two hits and varsity player Tyler Graham with 15 hits. The highest-scoring players were also Hansen with 20 points and Graham with 100 points. The Geese Scholastic Bowl teams will travel to Knoxville on Feb. 19 to play against them and West Central.
