
The Wethersfield volleyball team opened up Lincoln Trail Conference play Wednesday night with a two-set win over Mercer County (25-16, 26-23).
“We played well, considering it was our first conference match, and in front of a pretty rowdy Mercer County crowd,” said WHS Coach Tonya Vincent.
Vincent praised her team for how they responded, defensively, throughout the match. “We dug up some really hard hits by their two best players (Molly Hofman and Gabriella McPeek),” she added.
Players leading in that defensive effort were seniors, Kennady Anderson, Cora Hodge and Raqi Young, who had 14, 12 and 9 digs respectively.
Junior, Kendall Vincent also has 12 digs. Senior, Marlie Lindstrom, and junior, Lajaya Angel, each added 3 digs and senior, Sophie Nimrick had 1.
Defensively, at the net, juniors Emerson Nelson and Angel each had a pair of blocks. Young and Vincent had one block apiece. \Vincent and Anderson led the offensive attack with 8 and 5 kills, respectively. Nelson and Angel each had two, while Nimrick recorded one.
Setting up the hitters was Raqi Young, who had 16 assists on the night. Anderson served up one ace.
WHS is now 6-2 overall and 1-0 in LTC play, while Mercer County falls to 2-7, 0-1.
