The annual Kewanee Veterans Day Service, put on by the Kewanee Veterans Council, will have a new location this year.

The service is usually held at the American Legion building on Railroad Avenue, but the building is now up for sale and the Legion members are in the process of moving into their new facility on East Third Street.

Thompson said the Wethersfield School District approached them about holding a service for the students inside the school this year. Rather than hold two events, the decision was made to hold one event for the community in the gym.

The service will be held on Monday, Nov. 11 and kick off at 9:30 a.m. with a reception for area veterans. All veterans are invited to attend and refreshments will be served.

At 10 a.m., the public is invited to attend the service along with high school students.

The schedule of events include the singing of the National Anthem, performed by Brooke Shores and Saphyre Murphy and the WHS band, directed by Patrick Wilson. The anthem will be followed by the introduction of the Color Guard and the POW/MIA Recognition.

Mayor Gary Moore and the City Council members are invited to attend, and Mayor Moore will provide remarks, after which, two high school students, William Ly from KHS and Alivia Lempke from WHS will speak.

At 11 a.m., outside on the lawn of the school, the firing squad will perform a 21-gun salute.

Afterwards, Thompson said area veterans are invited to attend a drive-by parade that goes down Vine Street and Central Boulevard past Central School at 11:30 a.m. and down to Visitation and Irving schools.

On its Facebook page, the Wethersfield School District posted that it looked forward to coming together as a school community to honor our veterans and instill in our students a deep respect for their service.

“Thank you for your support, and we hope to see everyone dressed in red, white, and blue for this meaningful event,” the post read.
