The varsity and junior varsity teams of the Wethersfield Scholastic Bowl Geese faced United and West Central Thursday evening at the season’s first meet.

It was also Wethersfield’s first home meet of the season.
The meet ended with one win and one loss for the varsity team and two losses for the JV. This year, Wethersfield’s JV team has nine members, with Jayden Magnussen and Max Birdsong as the team’s co-captains. The varsity team has eight, with Joey Drawyer as its captain.

The first teams to go against each other at the meet were Wethersfield and West Central. Wethersfield members Parker Miskinis answered one tossup question; Makenna Witte answered three; Tyler Graham answered three and Joey Drawyer answered nine. In total, the Geese answered 16 out of the 20 tossup questions, with six of them being correct.

Twenty-three out of 60 bonus questions were answered by the WHS team, and five were correct. Each 10-point question got the team to 110 points.

Although Wethersfield scored a good number of points, West Central’s team also scored 110. To break the tie, another question was asked. Tyler Graham buzzed in with the correct answer, getting the team to 120 points and scoring their first win of the season.

The second matches had United and West Central facing each other. The varsity match ended with a win for United. The third match pitted Wethersfield against United. Witte answered two tossup questions; Graham answered four and Drawyer answered seven. Four of the 13 answered tossups were correct.

For the bonuses, the team was able to answer 22, and three were correct. Wethersfield scored 70 points, but that wasn’t enough to beat United’s 120.

As for the JV matches, the first ended with 180 points to West Central and 40 to Wethersfield. The third match was much closer, with United at 160 and Wethersfield at 100, six questions off from a tie.

The fastest buzzers of the meet were JV co-captain Jayden Magnussen with 13 hits and varsity captain Joey Drawyer with 16 hits. The players with the most points scored were JV Co-Captain Max Birdsong with 30 and varsity player Tyler Graham with 40.
