Kewanee Community Unit School District #229 recently announced that two of its educators have been honored with prestigious awards from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) as part of the 2026 Those Who Excel: Teacher of the Year program.

Amy Miler, Kewanee High School Spanish teacher and Key Club advisor has been honored with the Award of Excellence.

Alicia Ralston, Central Elementary/jr. high school fifth grade teacher and instructional coach has received the Award of Meritorious Service.

These state-level honors recognize school personnel who have made significant contributions to Illinois’ public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools.

Amy Miler: Award of Excellence

To receive the Award of Excellence, the most prestigious of the Those Who Excel honors, educators must have demonstrated a commitment to equity and to the success of all students. They regularly collaborate with colleagues, students, and families to create positive school cultures. They are lifelong learners who connect their schools to the community at large and who inspire other education professionals within and beyond their schools.

“Amy Miler represents the heart of Kewanee CUSD 229. Her energy is infectious, and her commitment to excellence ensures that every student who crosses her path feels capable of achieving greatness,” said Kewanee Schools Supt. Rebecca Baney

Alicia Ralston: Award of Meritorious Service

Educators presented with the Award of Meritorious Service have gone above and beyond in service to their school communities. They are experienced educators who take on leadership opportunities and whose accomplishments uplift the culture of learning in their school. They stand as exemplars of their profession and have become integral members of their schools and districts.

“Alicia’s dedication to the craft of teaching is unmatched,” said Supt. Baney. “Whether she is mentoring a fellow teacher or guiding a student through a difficult concept, her service to this district is a cornerstone of our success at Central School.”

All 2026 honorees will be celebrated at the annual ISBE “Those Who Excel” banquet at a later date this year.

“Congratulations to our 2026 honorees and thank you for your dedication to our students’ futures,” said Supt. Baney.
