The Kewanee Park District’s recovery from the July 15 tornadoes is nearly complete, the park board learned at its meeting Thursday.

Andrew Dwyer, executive director of the park district, reported that some work was going on at Chautauqua Park. Dwyer said he is working with the district’s insurance agent on getting final approval for electrical and fencing work at Windmont.

It will be a priority to get the electric service restored at Windmont in time for this year’s Christmas displays, he said.

Dwyer noted the efforts of Wethersfield High School to raise money to replace trees in the parks that were destroyed by the tornadoes. He said with that money and other funds, 45 to 50 new trees will be planted in the parks.

Park Board President Paula Kapacinskas asked if the Wethersfield students might challenge Kewanee High School students to match or exceed their donation. “There’a a possibility there,” Dwyer replied.

Also Thursday:

— Board members discussed holding a “meet and greet” this fall for the board and the public, to observe the park district’s 105th anniversary.

— Dwyer reported that work is proceeding on the remodeling of the tennis courts at Windmont. The lighting has been installed, he said, and the new asphalt surface should be installed in the next few days.

Dwyer said the project, which will also include new fencing, pickle ball courts and basketball hoops, should be finished by the end of October.

— Dwyer said he is finishing the process of filing an application for state Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) funds to pay for a new playground at Windmont that would comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

— The board accepted the resignation of Justin Raver as the district’s attorney, effective Oct. 31. Raver is taking a position with the U.S. Attorney’s office in Rock Island.

John Blachinsky, who has been the park district’s attorney in the past, was named to succeed Raver.
