Lauren Harbison was quick to set the tone Friday against the Titans, striking out the side in the top of the first inning.
The pitcher then hit a single in her first at-bat, but was later caught stealing. Nimrick struck out the second and four batters in the lineup to retire the side.
Nimrick then returned the favor and hit a single off of Harbison, but Harbison struck out the next two batters to neutralize the scoring threat.
What followed was a quick four up, three down by the Titan defense in the bottom of the second inning.
The Mallard’s ace then struck out 2 of 3 batters at the top of the third inning, keeping the zeros on the scoreboard. Nimrick followed suit by fanning 2 of 3 Henry-Senachwine batters to close out the inning.
The Mallards put themselves in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth inning. Grace Anderson hit a single and Abbie Stanbary grounded into a fielder’s choice, advancing Anderson to third.
There was a fielding error on the play and Stanbary moved to second base. Brooklynn Thompson then reached first on an error, but the other two runners were held up at second and third.
Nimrick came through in the clutch and struck out the next three batters she faced. The game remained scoreless heading into the fifth inning.
There was a slight crack in the Mallard’s defense when Traidan Hier reached first on an error, but Elle Eastman grounded into a fielder’s choice and Hier was out at second. Harbison struck out the next batter to retire the side.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, MacKenzie Hartwig started off the inning with a walk. Harbison then hit an RBI triple, plating Hartwig to break the ice at 1-0. Harbison then scored on a wild pitch for the only other run of the game.
Harbison went on to strike out 2 of the final 3 Annawan-Wethersfield batters in the seventh inning to secure the 2-0 win.
