Poets, aspiring poets and poetry lovers are invited to the Galva Arts Council building on Exchange Street for “Poetry Out Loud,” a special night of poetry reading on Saturday, Jan. 31. The program runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

According to GAC board president, Linda Getter, “The evening is a celebration of the written word, where the beauty of language comes alive.”

Audience members are invited to read/recite their favorite poems or their original creations. Getter encourages people of all ages to join the evening’s program and asks that each participant limit their reading to three poems.

“It’s a lovely evening for poetry lovers,” said Getter. “Whether you come to recite or just listen, you will find it all worthwhile.”

According to the National Poetry Recitation website, this year’s focus is on America’s 250th anniversary. The Poetry Out Loud program will focus on poems that celebrate the rich tapestry of American history and culture. “The GAC program, however, encourages poetry of all kinds, “said Getter.

The program is sponsored in part by the Illinois Arts Council. Others sponsoring the event are the State Bank of Toulon, Sutton and Associates and Country Financial.
